Question by sparkygirl: What is wrong, if anything, with the Gateway desktop. It has 8 GB of memory?
I want to purchase a new computer, and everyone tells me that the IMAC is the best desktop to purchase. The gateway has more memory. Wouldn’t that be better? I want an all-in-one computer and I don’t want to spend $ 1200. The gateway is just over $ 700. Any negatives with buying a gateway?

just because there’s more RAM which in ur case is 8 gb does not mean it will always be faster. you should also look at the cpu’s speed, the type of motherboard for future upgrades, and the type of graphic card if you’re into gaming.
also, even though some computers might have high memory, the speed of the memory could be one of the lowest ones and it will not perform better than another set of memory that has a faster speed.
What do you think? Answer below!

My personal experience with Gateway has been that they typically have substandard parts in use for their video and audio components. Additionally, I find their Customer Support to be somewhat lacking, at best, and insulting at worst.
No. I have a Gateway FX and have had it for 8 months with no problems (the FX was $ 1100). 8GB of RAM is a little bit overkill, but It doesn’t hurt. You won’t run out of memory, that’s for sure! Go and get it. IMAC is good for editing photos, videos, etc and making websites and it’s good for graphics designers. Windows-based computers (like the gateway) is good for everything from editing to gaming. BTW, Safari is the BEST internet browser. That’s the only thing I can think of as a plus for getting the IMAC.
You should be fine. it must have 64bit Vista or else it would not have 8GB of memory. Vista is a resource hog! MAC’s are more expensive but well worth it. I would go with the MAC but money talks so if all you can pay for is the gateway make sure you get a warranty!
It really depends on what your looking for in a computer.
Gateways are less expensive because they use cheaper parts. however, most companies do this as well.
The reason the gateway has 8GB of memory is because microsoft operating systems require more memory than Macintosh’s OSX operating systems.
Think of the applications you use the most and check if they can be used on a macintosh.
If your looking to play computer games or anything, get a microsoft, however in my experience (hardware tech.) i rarely have to work on macintosh computers. Also, fixing a computer can be expensive, if the Macintosh is $ 500 more, it would be worth it if your going to need $ 500 dollars worth of repairs. (You probably won’t reach that high a price though).
good luck!
Its the software. IMAC uses OSX (macintoshes operating system) the Gateway uses Windows most likley Vista at this point but 7 if you wait till October to buy. Vista is not very stable it has several annoying “Features” that is why everyone says the IMAC is better. Personally I say get the Gateway and save the money. If you are a windows user like the other 90% of us it will be much easier to get use to Vista than OSX.
