Question by betty: Motorolla modem connection to Compaq desktop and laptop – need help?
I have a Motorolla modem which is used to connect my network thru lan to my compaq desktop with a Realtek RTL8139 Family PCI Fast Ethernet NIC lan card. At times I need to connect the same lan cord to my Compaq Armada Laptop which has a Xircom Ethernet Adapter 10/100 lan card. Problem is that when I remove the RJ connector from the Desktop and fix it to the Laptop the network does not get connected. Both machines are configured with Windows XP and both the machines have the same TCP/IP configuration.
How do I setup my computers so that I can switch the lan connection from one computer to the other without any problems?

Set static IP addresses to the Laptop and the desktop. This way the DHCP server (your router) will not have to refresh its IP list and you will just force the connection to the LAN.
