A desktop can be a workstation, and a workstation “can” be a desktop.
The only difference between them is specific hardware and software. A Workstation has work software only, no “flashy” things, and tends to have good hardware for specific reasons.
Short reason: go with either. Both can hook up to a central server.
My opinion, go with a desktop, workstations are more expensive.
