Question by Dave: Can Google Desktop or WDS index data within a SQL Server Database?
I’m curious to know if a desktop search engine, such as Google Desktop, has the ability to look for and index data held within a SQL database.
Answer by TheMadProfessor
Being able to access SQL data via an index – sorta. Assuming it could access the database to begin with, a search engine would pass a query to the server containing the database, but the Query Analyzer within SQL Server would make the decision whether to use a given index or not.
Creating a whole new index – almost certainly not, a search engine would likely not have the necessary permissions to do so unless whoever created the database foolishly made such permission PUBLIC.
